CVS Shopping Trip: Paid Nothing! Got $5 ECBs Back!

My CVS pharmacy starts the new weekly ad on Saturday evening. So the current and new weekly deals run at the same time for those few hours that night. I often shop during this time even though I sometimes end up getting rainchecks for deals going out-of-stock.

 

Paid $0 for these, just tax, plus got $5 ECBs for next week!
The total saved $34!

 

For this shopping trip, I did two transactions.

CVS: FREE Herbal Essence Hair Care PLUS $2 Money Maker!!!

Here's another surprising transaction I just did at CVS tonight.

I've read that for some, the BOGO Herbal Essence coupon from 7/28 PG is ringing up at $4.99 instead of just $2.50, which is the sale price. I tried it tonight, and it worked! I still got the $1 ECB for buying 2 afterwards.

This is the breakdown of the transaction:
Buy 4 Herbal Essence Hair Care products, $2.50 each
Use 2 BOGO coupons from 7/28 PG, -$4.99 x 2
Pay $0.02, Get $2 ECBs (limit is 6, not 1 like in the ad)
=$1.98 Money Maker

COUPON ETHICS: Should the cashier have given me $4.99 off for the BOGO coupon?

Some are reporting that their cashier will manually adjust the coupon to the sale price of $2.50. My cashier did not do this. When she scanned the coupon, it automatically deducted $4.99 for the coupon. So is CVS losing money or are they cheating Procter and Gamble?

This is my take on the issue- CVS needs to deduct $4.99 for the coupon. It was CVS's decision to lower the sale price of the product, so, they are losing money. But they put it on sale so we are more interested in buying it. They would much rather sell it to you and me for $4.99.

Kinda like at a yard sale when the prices start dropping off later in the day.

So when we use a BOGO coupon, CVS is able to get that higher profit margin again. But instead of us paying for it, it's the manufacturer. Also, remember that manufacturer coupons get reimbursed at face-value plus shipping. The store makes a little money because of that extra shipping cost for every single coupon they submit to the manufacturers.

So, by giving us the regular price off the BOGO coupon of $4.99, CVS makes up the money they are losing having the product on sale.

CVS: Cheap Band-Aids and FREE First Aid Case

Buy 3 select first aid items at CVS this week and get a FREE case to put them in PLUS $5 ECBs! Target and Walgreens also offer a free case with 3 first aid items. But this deal at CVS is better. Why?

Free coupons worth $15 inside the case! Be warned, however, that you will need to do some treasure hunting. Many of these cases don't have the coupon booklets. If you do find one, you'll get another surprise. There is a coupon for $5 off 3 select First Aid items.

So, this is the transaction I did:
Buy 3 Band-Aids, $3.79 each
Buy First Aid Kit Case
Use $5 off 3 coupon inside the case
Pay $6.79, Get $5 ECBs
=$1.37 for 4 items or $0.34 each!

COUPON ETHICS: How would you handle this?
The packaging on case says that it includes a $15 coupon booklet. I have no problem using the $5 off 3 coupon that is in the case, since I am getting it anyway. I look at it like I'm using a "peelie" coupon. Also, the coupon booklet does not say "Good for next purchase". However, I would not take one from other cases I am not getting. Whoever gets the bag owns that coupon booklet. It is part of their purchase.

Do you have qualms about using coupons from a package to pay for that said package (or in this situation, to use for the other items in the transaction- the bandages)? If so, use the $0.50 Band-Aid coupons in the 7/28 SS. Then next time CVS has this deal again, use the higher value coupon booklet!

My CVS Shopping Trip

The CVS batteries I found were 10-pk + 2 bonus batteries. The price tag said 2/$6.00 or $6.79 each. CVS Batteries are BOGO this week. So, even if one pack is free, the other rang up $6.00! We've used this brand before and they work great.

Check the back page of your CVS weekly ad! Some areas are getting $3/$15 coupons from the Magic Coupon Machine. So far, I saw this in the Richmond VA and Baltimore MD weekly ads. It seems very regional, but hurray for those who get it. For some reason, I have not been receiving and email coupon for two weeks now. I am definitely psyched that we're getting this $3 off $15 coupon in our area!

Other areas are getting $0.75 off Mars single bars. And for those who still get email coupons, what value are you guys getting. Many are reporting getting 20% off coupons! Thanks, Wild For CVS!

The smaller 3 oz Jergens Lotions are Buy 2 Get $5 ECBs. The limit is also 8! The Magic Coupon Machine is also printing out a $2 off 2 lotion CVS Q. So... if you can find this many, you could get 16 FREE Jergens lotions plus $0.88 overage! Worried about getting off the Clutter-Busting Challenge wagon? These would be great donations for the women's shelter in your area!

CVS: Easy Beauty Returns, Part 2 and Deals and Shopping Trip

Last week, I shared with you the return policy of CVS's Beauty Club. I was able to return 4 nail polishes with no hassle. I got the same exact type but different colors. My cashier didn't ask for any receipts- although your mileage may vary. Have receipts handy anyway!


The Starbucks K-Cups are not BOGO, unfortunately, but Folgers instant coffee is, regular and decaf (but they are different prices). Plenty of cereals were also included in the $1.77 sale. And boy were my kids glad to have Fruity Pebbles for breakfast. For only $0.77, I can grant them that small joy.

I also found a Venus razor for $6.99 that produced $3 ECBs. Using a $3 manuf. q and 30% off made this FREE with a lil' overage.

I thought the travel size Crest would give $3 ECBs like they have before. But alas, no. So I had to return it. Because I used ECBs to make the purchase, they put the amount of the return back on a CVS card.

CVS FREE Money with "Cashback" Rewards!

We haven't had a credit card for many years (not for any real honorable reason... well, this is a rabbit trail for next time). Anyway, I have a bit of cashback envy. Thankfully, CVS doles out quarterly Extra Bucks Rewards to the tune of 2% back. Even with all the coupons I use at CVS and getting free items plus overage sometimes, I still get Extra Bucks Rewards. This past quarter was 4% back and I got a whopping $3!!! That's FREE money! Minus the credit card bill.

I find it best to register the CVS card online. Having an account allows me to print extra coupons that print from the Magic Coupon Machine at home (not all but some good ones). Also, I can send my Extra Bucks and Beauty Rewards straight to my CVS card instead of having to print it out.

Be sure to stop by CVS to get your quarterly bucks from the Magic Coupon Machine or load it to your card from the CVS website like I did.

Almost FREE Lotions at CVS!

Aveeno lotions $0.50 each!

My baby girl had eczema the day she was born. We've tried lots of creams and lotions and Aveeno brands work the best for her... well, Arbonne lotions work the best but I don't have coupons for those.

CVS has many types of Aveeno creams and lotions up to 12 oz on sale for $4.99, including their Positively Ageless line (regularly priced at $9.99). Plus buy 2 and get $6 ECBs. PLUS the limit is more than 1... some say it's 12! As you can see I bought 4 and there were plenty on the shelf. With the $3/2 Aveeno coupon, they were only $0.50 cents each.

 These would be great teacher gifts for Valentine's Day too!

CVS: Save 50% on Toys and Chocolates at !

Target is my fave place for Christmas clearance BUT it's frustrating to find most items I waited for 50% clearance gone on Dec 26th!

So I was so happy to see CVS had plenty of toys, including Discovery Kids cameras, on clearance. The Lego-type minifigures was $3 with a vehicle, 3 minifigures and 3 tools. The girl's jewelry music box with dancing ballerina was only $5. They also had $2.50 harmonicas, mini-dolls, kitchen gadgets, emergency car kits, bath robe sets! Lots of stuff 50% off.

As for the candy, Hershey's Kisses were $1.99 already. With the $2.50 off 2 CVS Q and $1.10 off 2 manufacturer's Qs, they come out $0.20 each! I went ahead and separated the colors into baggies, red for Valentine's, green for St. Patricks, the rest for decorating cookies or just to eat now.

Super Cheap Deal on Christmas Cards at CVS!

CVS has another Hallmark card deal:

I've done this deal a couple times and it also works for $0.99 cards like giftcard holders or Christmas cards. So buy 3 for $2.98 get $3 ECBs. For even more savings, there is also a $3 off 3 cards CVS coupon. They are good for any type of card, like birthday or thank you cards.

A while ago, there was also a coupon for $2 off 3 cards, but's it's gone now. If you happen to have it, that's a $5 moneymaker! Which is perfect for me because I also need to pick up eggs and milk at CVS. It would be nice to also get these for free!

BOGO Theater Box Candy + $3 ECBs wyb $10

Even though CVS has been slammed all weekend, shelves are still stocked well. A nice surprise was BOGO movie theater candy, making them $0.75 each! Only 4-6 oz candies are BOGO, so watch the size. Since we love watching movies at home, I like to stock-up on this candy. Plus, it’s easier to limit myself to one box instead of a whole bag of candy. I am a recovering junk food addict.

If you prefer gel deodorants, Lady Speedstick is also on sale. CVS also has Honest Ade, besides the teas. This is new. I love the Orange Mango! They also had plenty of Prep H wipes, though it’s hard to find. This is one of those nice moneymakers you hope to never ever use. But if you do, at least you made money on it.

A note on the Gas Card deal:

The store manager told me that they now have $10 Shell Gas Cards available for the promotion- Buy $30 select items, Get $10 Gas Card. Usually, say the deal lasts a couple of weeks, I can buy $15 worth now and $15 later. On the second week, I will get the $10 gas card. This is works for most deals during the promotional period. BUT not for the gas cards! These deals are different every week and they do not rollover. Since the $10 gas card deals are available through September, keep an eye out for deals on items you would normally buy, even without a coupon.
Think of it as getting $20 for $30 worth, since you would pay $10 for gas every week anyway. For us, that’s not even 3 gallons. It’s so sad. I miss when gas wasn’t even $1 a gallon!

It was a nice change of pace to enjoy soft-serve ice cream and a frappe at McDonald’s this afternoon. I brought my laptop to use their Wi-Fi to scout drugstore deals starting tomorrow. I even brought 2 headphones so the little peeps could listen to the last episode of the Green Ring Conspiracy on Adventures in Odyssey. Everything was pleasant. Lots of families had the same idea so the place was a bit crowded.

All was well until some teenagers came in showcasing their non-existent muscles and decided to show off their bad language as well. At least they turned it down a notch after Big Mama reminded them that younger children are present. Although they backed off the “F” word, there was plenty of the “H” word and unholy use of God’s name. Then our McDonald’s field trip ended abruptly. If only I remembered the power cord then the kids could have listened to more stories online instead of trash, but alas it wasn’t meant to be.

Some helpful tips: I shop CVS on Sundays before all other couponers snatch the freebies. Swipe the CVS card at the coupon machine first. Use the Green Tag card at checkout! If you have plenty of ECBs to rollover, you can use these to print photos, buy the Sunday paper, get passport photos and buy grocery staples like milk, bread and eggs. Treat ECBs like cash- don't let them go to waste!

FREE Toiletries at CVS

All except for the Doritos ($6 for 3 after ECBs) were FREE this week at CVS. I went Sunday afternoon and most of the Gum flossers were already gone! So if you still plan to go tomorrow (last day) and they've run out on any deals, grab a raincheck. Everything here plus the contact lens solution and two newspapers would have cost $38 BUT with coupons from last Sunday's paper (I clipped them right at the store), $3 Quarterly Bucks, and ECBs from last week that I rolled over this week, of course I didn't pay that much. Instead my total was $5 after all the ECBs I got back. My wallet and teeth are very happy! FREE Hershey's Kiss at CVS

With Valentine's comes chocolate. And did I get a nice surprise at CVS today. Lately, the magic coupon machine has printed $4 off 40 oz. Hersheys. But alas, that item is nonexistent. Even Publix did not carry this size. So, my CVS manager offered to substitute Hershey's Kisses (on sale through Saturday for $3) as a replacement. This meant a $1 MoneyMaker and FREE Kisses.

It doesn't hurt to ask your store if they would also substitute another Hershey's product. Your Valentine's might get sweeter.

On a side note, Bertolli Alfredo Sauce on sale for 3/$5, is included in the Unilever sale. To me, $1.66 for a jar of anything Bertolli without a coupon is a great price. The $5 ECBs brings it down to $1.11 each- still cheaper than Wal-Mart!

CVS Deals Starting Sunday 1-23-11

Last week's CVS deals were great for me. For some reason though, I got Kudos and candy coupons and nothing else from the coupon machine. I hope it isn't broken! This week is a little slower. Some are repeats like the Crest Pro-Health but FREE after ECBs without any coupon. They were out of stock Friday but I'm glad I had to wait. Now it will be a $1 money maker with the coupon I have. For those with the 12/26 PG- the $2 coupon is an even better money maker.

Publix at Mobile Hwy had Honest Tea in a bin by the registers awhile back. There were $1 off 2 and $0.50 tearpad coupons attached. I'll get these for this week's CVS Coke/Kraft deal:

Buy $15 of Coke or Kraft (Nabisco Crackers) Get $5 ECBs back
My deal:
Buy 10 Honest Tea ($1.50 each)
Use 5 coupons for $1 off 2 from tearpad
Pay $10 out-of-pocket
Get $5 ECBS back

It's not the best deal but I love these drinks. For date-night-in, I get sushi (Publix Mobile Hwy is the best!) and these drinks while we watch a movie ($1 Blockbuster Express at Publix). The treats always makes me feel fancy!
